England fight back to draw third Test in South Africa

England captain Dylan Hartley, who spent ten minutes in the sin bin during the second half, was satisfied with the result and the performance, which he thought represented a step forward from the first two Tests.

'Defence was good, ball-retention was good - we just didn't come away with the result. It was a tough Test, as always,' he said.

'In the last two games we've learned when the green machine gets going they're hard to stop. We took a bit of pride today in two-man tackles, getting it off the line, stopping their momentum.'

Coach Lancaster was disappointed with the number of penalties his side conceded, but was pleased to see some of his younger players hold their own against one of the world's best rugby teams.

'When Owen [Farrell] came on we had under 21s at 10, 12 and 13. Alex Goode was outstanding on his debut at full-back, so overall when you look at where we were and where we are now, I think we are in a good place,' he said.
