Children who are overweight or obese have a significantly higher prevalence of psoriasis, and adolescents with psoriasis, regardless of their body weight, have high cholesterol levels, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published online in the Journal of Pediatrics. The results of this study suggest that the greater the risk of heart disease in patients with psoriasis starts in childhood in the form of cholesterol levels higher.Among the other authors of the study: Mary Helen Black, MS, PhD, Ning Smith, MS, and Steven J. ?Psoriasis can also put children at risk of metabolic disease, as seen in adults, that?s why studies like these are very important to help primary care providers learn the best way to take care of these children,? says co-author Amy Porter, MD, Southern California Permanente Medical Group Regional Medical Lead for weight management, and a pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center.
?Both conditions are characterized by a low-level chronic inflammation,? notes Dr. Koebnick. ?Yet we know almost nothing about the metabolic risk of psoriasis, especially when combined with obesity in children.? Psoriasis in children may increase cholesterol levels in the blood, which can also be triggered by the presence of obesity.
