Search engine optimization experts agree that link popularity is now considered by most search engines to be one of, if not, the most important factors that determines a site?s ranking in the search engines.

If you?re not sure what your site?s link popularity rating is, then use this link popularity check tool to check your link popularity rating in the top search engines.

Let?s say we have two identical sites. One has thousands of targeted sites linking to it. The other only has a few incoming links. It?s virtually guaranteed that the site with thousands of incoming links will rank higher than the other site.

So how do you find reciprocal link partners?

First, you need to work out what type of web sites would link to your site. Here are some examples of sites and the types of sites that would link to them.

	Pet store		Pet lovers? sites
	Site design service		Webmaster sites
	Travel site		Local guides
	PC store		Software/hardware review sites
	Music store		Music fan sites

As you can see, you?re looking for sites that are on the same subject matter, but not necessarily similar.

So now you know what sites to look for, how do you find these sites?

There are basically two methods:

In the following examples, we?ll use ?pet lovers?? sites as the type of sites we?re looking for.

1. Find targeted sites in the web directories, such as the Open Directory Project.

Go to a directory?s home page and search with the keywords, ?pet lover.? Then click on the category the top listings belong to. The sites listed in these and related categories are the types of sites you need to contact.

If the category has a resources or directories sub-category, then try the sites in those categories first. Resources typically offer links to sites on the same subject.

2. Use the search engines to find sites that link to your competitors? web sites.

Using the search engines is probably a more efficient method of find reciprocal link partners, than searching the directories.

Go to your favorite search engine, such as Google, and search for any of the following keyword phrases:

?pet directory? ? Searches for pet directories.

?pet search engine? ? Searches for pet search engines.

?pet lover? links.html ? Searches for link pages in pet lover?s web sites.

?pet lover? resources.html ? Searches for the resource page in a pet lover?s Web site.

Don?t forget to include the quotation marks to narrow your search.

Also try replacing the ?.html? with other file extensions, such as ?.htm,? ?.shtm,? ?.shtml,? ?.cfm,? and ?.php.?

Now make a list of the sites. Then create a links or resources page and add links to the sites on that page.

After you?ve done that, link to that page from your home page. If you have hundreds of links, split the pages into different sub-categories. When you?re done, upload the pages to your server.

Now contact each site by informing them that you have linked to their site and request a link in return. Don?t forget to be polite and inform them of the benefits of exchanging links.

Some sites, such as web directories, will not require a reciprocal link. So simply submit your link.

The most important tip I can give you with regards to reciprocal linking is to only exchange links with targeted sites. I highly recommend that you don?t exchange links with sites that bear no relation with your site. If you link to poor-quality or spam sites, it could affect your search engine rankings.

WARNING

Under no circumstances should you link to, or add links from, link farms. Link farms are considered as spam sites in the eyes of the search engines. Good luck with improving your link popularity.

Twitter adopts Do-Not-Track privacy option

Twitter will honor requests from users who do not want their online behavior tracked, the company said on Thursday, in contrast with Web companies such Google and Facebook whose business models rely heavily on collecting user data.

Twitter said it will officially support "Do Not Track," a standardized privacy initiative that has been heavily promoted by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, online privacy advocates and Mozilla, the non-profit developer of the Firefox Web browser.

Some browsers, including Firefox, Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Apple's Safari, include a "Do Not Track" option that sends a line of code to websites indicating the user does not want to be tracked. But under current regulations, it is up to the website to honor the requests.

Google has said it will implement a "Do Not Track" feature in its Chrome browser later this year.

The "Do Not Track" announcement also coincides with Twitter's recent push to provide a more personalized service. Twitter recommends "tailored suggestions" based on a user's Web surfing history, but does not use the data for any other purpose, the company said on Thursday.

"As always, we are committed to providing you with simple and meaningful choices about the information we collect to improve your Twitter experience," Twitter's Director, Growth and International, Othman Laraki, said in a blog post on Thursday. "For those who don't want to tailor Twitter, we offer ways to turn off this collection."

Twitter's support for the initiative was first announced on Thursday by Ed Felten, the FTC's Chief Technology Officer, during a panel in New York. The microblogging site later confirmed Felten's statement, adding in a Tweet: "We applaud the FTC's leadership on DNT."

Mozilla praised Twitter's move in a blog post and noted that adoption rates for "Do Not Track" have risen steadily, to 8.6 percent of desktop users and 19 percent of mobile users.

"We're excited that Twitter now supports Do Not Track and global user adoption rates continue to increase, which signifies a big step forward for Do Not Track and the Web," Mozilla said.

Twitter's decision to get onboard with "Do Not Track" represents something of a balancing act for the six-year-old company, which has been closely scrutinized on how it can generate enough revenue to justify its multibillion-dollar valuation.

Online tracking through bits of code embedded in websites known as "cookies" underpins the business models for many Internet companies.

Facebook, due to go public on Friday in the largest-ever U.S. IPO, has been valued at $104 billion, partially by investors who believe it can offer advertisers a platform for highly targeted ads based on perceived user interests. Google similarly generates billions annually by targeting ads based on what a user is searching for.

Major online destinations that have endorsed "Do Not Track" include Yahoo, which said in March it would allow consumers "to express their ad targeting preferences to Yahoo" beginning this summer.?

Christine Hill: Veterans Deserve to Be Economically Empowered

Sergeant Adam Widner had just finished nine months of personal-security detail in Afghanistan, where he was constantly on alert for those seeking to harm or kill him and others.

When he returned stateside in 2008, Adam was withdrawn socially, was hyper-vigilant, and suffered insomnia. He had significant hurdles to clear while transitioning back into civilian life and into a crowded college campus after exiting the battlefield.

His unsuccessful search for a veteran-friendly school nearly ended his college career before it began. Thankfully Kent State University (KSU) took Adam's call.

"Had Kent State not answered the phone, I probably wouldn't have looked any further into college," Adam said. "There are only so many times you are going to get that door shut in your face and keep trying."

That initial warm reception from KSU was not a fluke; instead it was a sign of things to come. The university's Center for Adult and Veteran Services (CAVS), which would formally open in January 2010, offered veterans-only orientation courses.

Institutions of higher education in many states are beginning to effectively collaborate to develop and disseminate state-wide best practices in supporting wounded student-warriors.

"Anyone could have walked in there with nothing but negativity on their shoulders, and they would have walked out feeling good about themselves and their service," said Adam, noting how important it was to be integrated into the student population through a mix of online courses, veterans-only courses, and mixed-population courses.

Personal understanding is exactly what veterans like Adam need when seeking higher education. The staff at KSU recognized Adam's behaviors -- being socially withdrawn and hyper-vigilant -- and continually made the effort to connect Adam with other veterans and to engage him in veteran activities. That persistence paid off when Adam agreed to be introduced to Joe Gross, an area outreach coordinator for Wounded Warrior Project (WWP).

"Joe saved my life," Adam said. "He got me all the help I could ask for. He got me into the vet center and talked me into going to the VA. I very much owe my life to Joe. Joe got me out of my house."

By getting out of his house and engaged with others, Adam also got involved with the Kent State Vets Club, which was in its infancy.

"Once I got the help with WWP and got affiliated with the student veterans' organization on campus, I really opened up," Adam said. "The Kent State Vets Club makes sure there is a camaraderie outside of class, so when you get in class you aren't separated from the general population. They want veterans to be a part of their community."

Adam said as he became more and more comfortable on campus, his grades began to improve accordingly: "I started raising my hand in class."

Adam graduated cum laude in August 2011, earning a bachelor's degree in general studies with concentrations in political science, communications, geography, and non-profit management.

"The only reason I really succeeded in the end was that Kent State resembled the selfless service that I found in the military," Adam said.
