Mount Rainier National Park ranger killed, gunman loose (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A gunman shot and killed a ranger in Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state on Sunday after a traffic stop, and authorities shuttered the park as a search for the shooter got underway, park officials said.

Ranger Margaret Anderson, a 34-year-old mother of two young children, stopped the gunman's vehicle at a roadblock on Sunday morning shortly after another ranger tried to stop the same car about a mile away, park spokesman Kevin Bacher said in a recorded statement.

"The suspect fled and is still at-large on foot," Bacher said, adding that local law enforcement and the FBI were assisting in the manhunt.

Authorities closed the park, which welcomes around 2 million visitors a year at its site on the west side of the snow-capped Cascade mountain range, and were evacuating visitors, a spokeswoman said.

About 85 visitors and 15 park staff remained inside the park's visitor center, along with law enforcement officers, and were being held there until it was deemed safe to leave, spokeswoman Lee Taylor said.

"They're safe and secure where they are," she said. "I don't know how long we're going to ask them to stay there. We certainly don't want them driving down the road if there's a gunman who might take a pot shot at them."

Taylor had earlier told CNN that Anderson, the ranger who was killed, was married to another ranger at the park.

"She is a dedicated public servant, very committed to visitors to the park and to helping to protect park resources. Her husband is also a ranger at Mount Rainier and they have two small children... So it's a horrible tragedy. It's a terrible loss of life of somebody who had dedicated herself to serving the public," she said.

Nigeria's Jonathan declares state of emergency (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency on Saturday in parts of Nigeria plagued by a violent Islamist insurgency, and ordered shut the borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger in the northeast.

Coming nearly a week after radical sect Boko Haram set off a series of bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day, including one at a church that killed at least 37 people and wounded 57, Jonathan told state television the measures would aim to restore security in troubled parts of Nigeria's north.

"The temporary closure of our borders in the affected areas is only an interim measure designed to address the current security challenges and will be resumed as soon as normalcy is restored," he said.

He added that his chief of defence staff had been instructed to take other "appropriate" measures, including setting up a special counter-terrorism force.

The blasts have raised fears that Boko Haram, a movement styled on the Taliban and whose name means "Western education is forbidden," is trying to ignite sectarian strife in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and top oil producer.

Jonathan has been criticised by the opposition and Christian groups for what they said was a slow response to the bombings.

"The crisis has assumed a terrorist dimension," Jonathan said. "I therefore urge the political leadership (in northern local governments) to give maximum cooperation to ensure that the situation is brought under control."

He listed the northern local governments affected by the decree, including a part of Niger state near the capital Abuja, the northern half of the conflict-prone city of Jos, and parts of Yobe and Borno in the remote, semi-arid northeast.

The bombings by the northern-based movement have strained Nigeria's already fractious north-south divide.

Jonathan, a Christian from the south, upset many northerners by running for and winning the presidency in April, which in the eyes of many tore up a tacit deal to rotate the top job between a northerner and a southerner every two terms.

More than 500 people were killed in post-election violence in the north after Jonathan's victory, reflecting long-standing northern grievances about perceived alienation and exclusion by the central government from the fruits of national oil riches, concentrated in the south.

"CRUSH THE TERRORISTS"

Earlier in the day, Jonathan visited the scene of the deadliest Christmas attack, on St. Theresa's Catholic church in Madalla, on the outskirts of Abuja.

"We will crush the terrorists. If there are institutions ... which are harbouring terrorists, we will deal with them," he told weeping relatives of the victims gathered in the church, amid tight security by dozens of armed soldiers.

Traces of the devastation were still evident, with the church windows shattered and glass on the ground.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman Yushua Shuaib said authorities were on "full alert" for more attacks.

"The government has put security throughout the federation, including near the flashpoints. We are optimistic, but we are fully mobilised," he told Reuters.

The government held an emergency meeting with security officials on Thursday and is also looking at using other channels to stop the conflict, which started as a local northern problem but is fast destabilising the whole country.

National Security Adviser General Owoye Andrew Azazi told Reuters the security services were considering making contact with moderate members of Boko Haram via "back channels," even though explicit talks are officially ruled out.

In Jos, which was also bombed at Christmas, two dozen armoured personnel carriers were patrolling the streets ahead of New Year celebrations.

The commissioner of police for Plateau state, Dipo Ayeni, told Reuters: "We have deployed this tactic of a show of force so that we can celebrate the New Year without any hindrance, and so there should be no cause for panic."

"The events that caused Nigeria's civil war are repeating themselves," said Uche Udemezue, an Igbo woman in the southeast, referring to the secessionist war of her people against northern rulers in which more than a million people were killed in the late 1960s.

"The north should know nobody has a monopoly on violence."

Attacks in and around the capital - including one on the U.N. headquarters in August that killed at least 24 people - suggest Boko Haram is trying to raise its jihadist profile.

In a separate, unrelated incident, clashes between rival ethnic groups in southeastern Nigeria's Ebonyi state on Saturday killed at least 50 people, the state government spokesman said, and police said mobile units had been sent to the state to quell the violence.

There was no suggestion they had anything to do with wider security problems, but the clashes are likely to add to Jonathan's woes at a time when his forces are already stretched.

Amazing Benefits of Pets on Human Health

Cat Dog

The benefits that pets can have on our health is amazing. I first learned some of the facts a few years ago when I read the Physical & Medical Health Benefits of Pets article on PetEducation.com

The Dr. Oz Show recently had a segment on the benefits that pets can play on our health. Makes me happy that pets are getting the attention that they deserve! Dr. Oz and his guest, Betty White, talked about how elderly people who live alone but have a pet have to get up in the morning to take care of their pet. When they have a pet, they have to think about someone other than themselves. Here are the benefits of pet ownership that were shared on The Dr. Oz Show.

Health Benefits of Dogs

Dogs: Best pet to increase your overall health.
Dogs increase your overall survival. You walk them, so that gives you both exercise. Also, dog owners who have had a heart attack are 8 times more likely to live a year compared to non-dog owners.

Cats: Best pet to prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Cats dramatically help to reduce your blood pressure. Cat owners have a:

  • 30% less chance of having a heart attack.
  • 40% less chance of having a stroke.

Dr. Oz made the comment, ?if drugs could do this, we?d prescribe pets!?

Birds: Best pet for detecting a diabetic attack.
Birds are so sensitive that they can actually identify when a person has diabetic problems, and birds can warn them of such. There are very subtle changes in body chemistry when you have diabetes, and birds pick up on it.

Betta Fish Aquarium Kit

Fish: Best pet to reduce stress.
Just staring at fish is very meditative, and for that reason, they reduce stress.

Rabbits: Best pet for fighting allergies.
When young kids are exposed to rabbits, they build a tolerance and are less likely to have allergies from that. Rabbits are really allergenic because they lick themselves all the time and get the dander off. This fact was new to me. Many years ago, my allergist warned me that the bedding used with rabbits and other small pets can cause havoc with allergies for some people.

Elderly with pets

To learn more about the health benefits pets have on people, click the link mentioned at the beginning of this post. The PetEducation.com article has different information such as how pets:

  • Have a positive impact cholesterol and triglycerides levels
  • Predict seizures
  • Diagnose cancer
  • Alert to hypoglycemia
  • Control ?freezing? in Parkinson?s Disease

Monkey missing from San Francisco Zoo sought

A hunt is underway in San Francisco to find a 2-pound squirrel monkey that disappeared from the zoo Friday morning after vandals broke into his exhibit.

Banana Sam, 17 years old, disappeared overnight after vandals cut two holes in the mesh of the squirrel monkey exhibit.

Sam is 1 foot tall and looks harmless but has sharp teeth and "will definitely bite if provoked," San Francisco Zoo officials said in a statement.

"He is a valued member of the zoo, and we wish for a safe and speedy return," officials said.

It's unclear whether he escaped on his own or if the vandals stole him.

By Friday afternoon, someone had created a Twitter account for the missing monkey and was tweeting the primate's experiences around town.

"Arrived Fisherman's Wharf. People still wear fanny packs? Considering going back to zoo," @sf_BananaSam tweeted.

"OMG YOU GUYS RAINFOREST CAFE IS NOT WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE," said another tweet. "It's basically an Applebee's with a 'Sounds of the Jungle' CD playing. I'm out."

Surprisingly, Banana Sam isn't the first missing zoo creature with a Twitter account. An Egyptian cobra that disappeared from the Bronx Zoo in April managed to attract 200,000 followers before he was found six days later ? still at the zoo, curled up in a dark corner of the reptile house.

Let's hope Banana Sam has found an equally safe place to hide. Just in case, anyone with information on Sam's location can call the San Francisco Police Department at (415) 553-8090.

SiriusXM Shows Off Lynx, An Android-Powered, Portable Radio

When I was flipping through my SiriusXM player the other day I was thinking about how cool it would be if it had some flavor of Android running it (seriously). Well it appears that someone over at SiriusXM can read minds because today they unveiled their latest?portable?satellite radio, the Lynx. Here?s the kicker, it runs Android! However we have no idea what flavor of Android. If you didn?t know that it ran Android though, chances are you never would. Considering that way back in the beginning of this year SiriusXM was working on bringing Sirius Radio to Android devices it looks like they took it the complete opposite way.

It can used in a dockable in-car radio, used in a home docking kit, or used as a portable music player on it?s own with playback through the 3.5mm headphones or you can even use bluetooth headphones. You can also connect to the the internet through WiFi to upgrade the software easily. This ?SiriusXM 2.0? device boasts the following features:

  • Tune Start?: Automatically starts the currently playing song from the beginning so listeners will hear the whole song when tuning to any of their satellite radio music channels saved as a Favorite channel.
  • Radio Replays: Subscribers can build a library of up to 200 hours of programming from their Favorite satellite radio channels which are automatically recorded to allow for playback anywhere.
  • Pause, Rewind and Replay: Listeners can replay up to 30 minutes of live SiriusXM content on the currently tuned channel, and also access replay content on 5 favorite preset channels currently displayed.
  • Featured Favorites?:? A dynamic set of presets that can be automatically added as favorite channels, allowing users to easily discover new and specialty programming.
  • Show Finder?: An easy-to-use electronic programming guide offering a complete list of what?s on over the next 7 days by channel, with the ability to set reminder alerts when favorite shows are being broadcast.

SiriusXM 2.0 features will be offered by the Lynx for listening to SiriusXM Internet Radio through WiFi networks at home, office or accessible hotspot, including:

  • Start Now allows subscribers to go back 5 hours to select and listen to previously broadcast programming.
  • View program information, album art and read artist bios.
  • Rewind to hear programming again or skip forward to hear what?s playing next.
  • Pause live radio and pick up right where the listener left off
  • Access to Show Finder?, the electronic programming guide.

While this may not be the Android you know and love it?s still Android at heart. Rest assured if there is a will there?s a way and someone will do what they can to root this device as we?ve seen with with Android?s first sports watch, the MOTOACTV. Maybe we will be able to play Angry Birds while we are driving down the road.

But seriously, I am pretty excited about this device and the features it has. I like the idea of playing songs from the start rather than finding a good one to listen to only to find it?s at the end of the song. One thing is for certain; it?s nice to see the Android OS expanding into other technological aspects. You can purchase one of these badboys at the SiriusXM web shop for $249.99. It?s a pretty penny, but the features may be worth it. If you purchase one of these let us know in the comments section what you think of it.
