HTC One S Review: Head-To-Head With The One X And iPhone 4S

I've been fiddling around with the HTC One S for a few days now, and I have to say it's stolen a little piece of my heart. The hardware is just about perfect, with a 4.3-inch qHD display and a slender aluminum unibody shell, and software like HTC's Sense 4 overlay and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich only sweeten the deal. But, as per usual, there's plenty to consider out there. The wide world of mobile only grows wider by the second, with hot new phones launching left and right. Just today, Sprint's Galaxy Nexus and the LG Viper landed on store shelves, and lest we forget that the iPhone 4S and HTC's mamma jamma One X are also ready and waiting for new owners. So many options. To help, we've put the One S up against it's greatest competitors, the HTC One X and the iPhone 4S, in a spec showdown. Who will come out on top? Well, my dear readers, that ball is in your court.

On the lighter side, Randy Sarafan, the same guy who designed a chair that tweets his own farts (seriously), unveiled a lamp that shuts off whenever you shut your eyes. The downside: In order for it to work you have to attach electrodes to your face, which are plugged directly into the wall. Thanks, but we'll pass. And for those who prefer regular, old-fashioned lights, Philips launched its much-anticipated L-Prize winning 10-watt LED bulb on Earth Day. At $60 a pop, you might have to take out a second mortgage to replace every bulb in your home, but you'll recoup that money back on your energy bill, and Philips also announced some rebates to ease the pain.

Classic American musician sells timeless works of art

NEW YORK?Christie?s will present extraordinary works from the personal collection of Van Cliburn, one of the greatest pianists in history, on May 17.

In a conversation with Paul Holdengr?ber at the New York Public Library (NYPL) on May 15 at 7 p.m., Van Cliburn will reflect on his long and fascinating career, as well as expound on the fine points of his collection for sale. Tickets are available at livefromthenypl.showclix.com.

Born in 1934 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Harvey Lavan (Van) Cliburn Jr. started playing piano at the age of 3. His family moved to Texas when he was 6, and by the age of 12, the young prodigy won every major competition he entered. He went on to study at The Juilliard School in New York when he was 17.

Cliburn?s skyrocket to fame was launched in 1958 after his victory at the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The world-renowned pianist was then dubbed ?the Texan who conquered Russia? by Time magazine.

Cliburn?s recording of Tchaikovsky?s ?First Piano Concerto? was the first classical recording ever to sell a million copies, and since has gone triple platinum.

One of the judges who awarded Cliburn the top prize in Moscow in 1958 said at the time, ?His inborn artistry and subtle musicianship ennoble all that he plays.?

An honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London, Cliburn is the recipient of more than 20 honorary doctorate degrees. He has received multiple awards from Russian and American governments and has played for every U.S. president from Dwight D. Eisenhower to Barack Obama, as well as royalty and heads of state from dozens of other countries.

The Van Cliburn Collection

?After a concert, I would buy something to give me a tangible memory, for music and memory are indestructible,? Van Cliburn once said, according to Christie?s.

The highlight of the sale is the Steinway concert grand piano, which has always been at the center of the Cliburn home. It was his mother?s, Rildia Bee?s, and Cliburn spent considerable amount of his musical life practicing and working on it.

This piano is being sold to honor Rildia Bee, and proceeds will benefit The Juilliard School and The Moscow Conservatory, Van Cliburn?s alma maters.

The collection comprises rich and rare examples of 18 century English furniture, Russian works of art, silver, and jewels, highlighting Mr. Cliburn?s refined taste and passions in collecting.

Estimates range from $1,000 to $250,000. The total sale is expected to achieve in excess of $3 million.

Himalayan glaciers could be growing, new study finds

A new study published in Nature Geoscience has discovered Himalayan glaciers that are not shrinking at all. They could be getting larger.

Glaciers and sea ice around the world are melting at unprecedented rates, but new data indicates that this phenomenon may be lopsided. It seems that some areas of the Himalayan mountain range are melting faster than others, which aren't melting at all, a new study indicates.

Specifically, the Karakoram mountain range is holding steady, and may even be growing in size, the study, published in the April 2012 issue of the journal Nature Geoscience, suggests.

"The rest of the glaciers in the Himalayas are mostly melting, in that they have negative mass balance, here we found that glaciers aren't," study researcher Julie Gardelle, of CNRS-Universit? Grenoble, France, told LiveScience. "This is an anomalous behavior."

Karakoram mountains

The Karakoram mountain range spans the India-China-Pakistan border. It is home to the world's second highest peak, K2, and has the highest concentration of peaks over 5 miles (8 kilometers) high in the world. It is home to about half of the volume of the Himalayan glaciers.

The researchers used satellite photos to analyze the extent of the ice in about a quarter of the total range ? about 2,167 square miles (5,615 square kilometers). The photos were taken in 1999 and 2008. The researchers used two computer models to translate the images, revealing the elevation of the glaciers and estimating the extent of the ice.

They found that the glaciers are holding steady and based on the numbers might actually be gaining mass. But Gardelle warns this doesn't mean global warming and glacier melt isn't happening elsewhere.

"We don't want this study to be seen as questioning the planet's global warming," she told LiveScience. "With global warming we can get higher precipitation at high altitudes and latitudes, so thickening isn't out of the question." [10 Global Warming Myths Busted]

Glacier growth

Glaciers grow and shrink based on how much snow falls and the temperatures in the area. Why this area isn't showing the melt seen in other areas is still a mystery. "For now we don't have any explanation," Gardelle said. "There's been a study reporting an increase in winter precipitation, this could maybe be a reason for the equilibrium, but that's just a guess."

Because of its location and physical characteristics of the glaciers themselves, it was been exceptionally difficult to study the glaciers in this region. Usually satellite photos are combined with physical readings of the ice extent, and Gardelle says they'd like to get the physical data in the future to validate their findings.

Previous estimates had suggested the Himalayan mountain range as a whole was contributing about 0.04 millimeters per year to sea-level rise. These numbers now need to be adjusted to account for the anomaly of the Karakoram region, and are probably more like negative 0.006 millimeters per year, the researchers say.

"Evidently, extrapolation and analogy have failed in this significant region," Graham Cogley, a researcher from Trent University, in Canada, who wasn't involved in the study wrote in an accompanying essay in the same issue of Nature Geoscience.

"It seems that, by a quirk of the atmospheric general circulation that is not understood, more snow is being delivered to the mountain range at present and less heat," Cogley wrote. "Gardelle and colleagues have demonstrated that the mass balance of Karakoram glaciers is indeed anomalous compared with the global average."

Reed Hastings takes Comcast to task for skirting net neutrality

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings let loose a mini rant on Facebook Sunday, setting his sites squarely on Comcast and its data accounting practices. Highlighting one of the arguments for net neutrality, Hastings pointed out that viewing streaming videos using the Comcast Xfinity app on his Xbox doesn't count against his monthly cap, but other services do. "If I watch last night's SNL episode on my Xbox through the Hulu app, it eats up about one gigabyte of my cap, but if I watch that same episode through the Xfinity Xbox app, it doesn't use up my cap at all." It's slightly odd that different rules would apply to the same device using the same connection to stream the same content from different sources -- and exactly the sort of preferential and self-promoting behavior that net neutrality advocates are afraid will become the norm in an unregulated market.
