Interview with author, Shellie Neumeier ? Word Salt

(This article was originally published on Journey Thoughts March 1, 2011.)

Shellie writes for a young adult audience as I do.? She has a heart for youth and is a talented, gifted writer.? It is with great pleasure that I welcome Shellie today!

About the author:

Married for almost 20 years, Shellie and her husband have four wonderful children and two goofy greyhounds.?? After receiving her undergraduate degree in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin?Madison, she went on to acquire an early childhood education certificate.? Shellie also served in youth, children?s, special needs and family ministries for over twenty-two years.

Today she enjoys teaching her teens how to drive and chauffeuring her preteens across the Wisconsin countryside. And once in a while, she enjoys reading a classic tale or new suspense. In addition to writing fiction, Shellie is an avid blogger on her site http://shellieneumeier.com and several others including http://Samiesisters.com, http://www.suite101.com/profile.cfm/767774.com, and http://thebarndoor.net.

?Driven? is finally in print! How does it feel to hold your book in your hand?

Surreal. Amazing. Crazy. Like?who am I to have my name in print like that? It?s very cool.

What inspired you to write ?Driven??

What inspired me to write this book was the desire to encourage the next generation. They have an amazing access to their world with the ease of travel and the internet. They also have the opportunity to change their world unlike any previous generation has. But they?re also bombarded with harsh realism and even harsher dramatized ?realism.? It would be very easy to forget that they have a good and Godly purpose.

Tell us a little about yourself. What led you to begin writing?

Boredom, honestly. My children were old enough to entertain themselves when they weren?t in school and I grew tired of the daytime TV fare. When I threatened to delve into a project that involved power tools, my family scrambled to find something less dangerous for me to do. Telling stories had always been a favorite pastime, but writing them down hadn?t crossed my mind until my husband encouraged me to do so. I had to overcome my fear of grammar and creative writing rules before I could allow the story to develop.

I will forever be grateful for editors and critique partners; they are gifted beyond measure, in my mind.

Do you have a ?life verse? that you have claimed?? If so what is it and why is that verse so meaningful to you?

??For I know the plans I have for you,? declares the LORD, ?plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.??? Jeremiah 29:11

Awesome to know I?m not a random player wandering about without purpose! Love that.

Who (or what) is your greatest encourager when you write and why?

God is my greatest encourager. Whenever I?m in a slump or stuck in a doubting cycle, I take my two greyhounds for a walk out in the country and spend alone-time with God. Talk about inspiration.? My second greatest encourager is my husband. He?s the one that got me started along this path in the first place. And he keeps me trekking along, even when it feels like I?m going nowhere.

Is there anything else that you would like your readers to know about you that would give us even more of a glimpse into your personality and passions?

Someone once asked me if I were an animal what would I be and why. Here?s what I said? ?Hmm. I?d love to be a Jaguar, filled with grace and speed; or a she-lion, fierce in her cub?s protection; but my husband likens me to that dog in the movie UP (the one that says ?squirrel? with energized distraction).?? I think that gives you a good picture of my personality. :D

Where can we buy this book?

Amazon, Barnes and Noble online, and risenfiction.

About the book:

Robyn loves her friends, enjoys her youth group, and looks forward to meeting cute Caleb Montague. But when a caustic newsreporter challenges her school?s prayer team, Robyn must choose: defend their right to meet on campus and pray for whomever they wish or back down at the principal?s request.

Now she must learn what God wants her to do. And she had better learn fast, because there?s a supernatural enemy in town whose sole mission is to stop her?no matter the cost.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT Driven

Driven is a new take on the age old battle of good versus evil.? Gripping from the first page, this is one book you won?t want to put down.? ?Leanna Kay, co-creator of www.samiesisters.com ? a place for Christian girls to grow in faith.

Driven is a breathtaking book of tension, intrigue, and heartwarming emotion. From the moment I began to read until the very last word, I couldn?t put it aside. It held me enthralled!? ?Lindsay Below, author of Head Over Hand-Bought Heels ???????????????????????????????

Oily creatures of the night are seeking to destroy a group of teens at Brookfield Central High School. Their primary target? A resilient teenage girl who refuses to question her calling. But how much guilt, how much pain, and how much accusation can one human take? Laced with other-worldly plot threads akin to Frank Peretti?s This Present Darkness, Shellie Neumeier?s debut novel inspires followers of Christ to stand strong in God?s calling regardless of tragic circumstances. Along the way she explores tragedy in friendships and the beauty of redemption.? ?Caleb Jennings Breakey, Refining Teen Writers into Rockstars www.CalebBreakey.com

In the tradition of This Present Darkness and The Screwtape Letters, Driven pulls back the veil between worlds and reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against Satan and his minions. But the journey of Robyn and her friends against both physical and spiritual enemies also illustrates the more exciting truth: that ultimate victory rests with our God.? ?Anne Mateer, author of
Wings of Dream, September 2011.

Diplomats scramble to save Syria peace conference

Diplomats scrambled Friday to save a peace plan for Syria in the face of 11th-hour objections from Russia that threaten a key international conference on ending the nearly 16-month long conflict.

Western governments have told peace envoy Kofi Annan there is no point going ahead with Saturday's planned meeting in Geneva unless prior agreement can be reached on his proposals for a political transition in Syria, diplomats said.

With rights monitors saying violence claimed 183 more lives on Thursday, 108 of them civilians, UN-Arab League envoy Annan called crisis talks with senior officials of the major powers.

But diplomats said the fate of the peace conference could remain in the balance until a 1730 GMT meeting in Saint Petersburg between US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The conference, due to be attended by Clinton, Lavrov, and the foreign ministers of Britain, China, France, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey and Kuwait, is intended as a public show of support for Annan's peace efforts.

Annan announced the meeting on Tuesday, having said he would only convene it if he were sure ministers would unite around his plan to end the worsening violence, which rights monitors say has left more than 15,800 dead since March last year.

Russia, the last major ally of President Bashar al-Assad, has objected to a proposal that could limit membership of a transitional unity government in Syria, diplomats said.

Annan's plan, obtained by AFP, said the interim government could include Assad officials and the opposition "but would exclude ... those whose continued presence and participation would undermine the credibility of the transition and jeopardise stability and reconciliation."

Diplomats have said this means Assad could be ruled out of the government but did not automatically exclude his participation. Opposition figures could also be kept out under the same formula, they stressed.

Lavrov insisted on Thursday that Assad's fate "must be decided within the framework of a Syrian dialogue by the Syrian people themselves."

He said world powers had yet to agree on any final resolution based on Annan's proposals for Saturday's meeting.

"There are no agreed drafts. Work on a possible final document continues," he said.

Lavrov, who later held telephone talks with Annan, agreed that reforms were needed in Syria.

"It is clearly the case that a transitional period is required to overcome the Syrian crisis and finally establish stable, generally-accepted rules and norms that suit all groups of the Syrian population," he said.

-- 'Foreign players should not be dictating' --

But Lavrov said those changes had to come from inside Syria.

"Foreign players should not be dictating their solutions to the Syrians. We do not and cannot support any intervention or solutions dictated from abroad," he said.

Clinton, however, rejected any suggestion that Annan was proposing transition imposed from outside.

"In his transition document it is a Syrian-led transition, but you have to have a transition that complies with international standards on human rights, accountable governance, the rule of law," she said, speaking in Latvia before her departure for Saint Petersburg.

Clinton also insisted that by agreeing to attend the Geneva conference, Russia had implicitly signed up to Annan's proposals.

"It was very clear from the invitations that were extended by special envoy Kofi Annan that people were coming on the basis of the transition plan that he had presented," she said.

Russia has annoyed the West throughout the Syrian crisis by refusing to call for the exit of Assad. It has also defied pressure to stop delivering military hardware to his regime, a long-time ally.

Amid the flurry of diplomatic activity, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius was to hold Paris talks with Abdel Basset Sayda, head of the exiled opposition Syrian National Council, which has expressed its own reservations about any transition that does not require Assad to quit.

"The opposition has not yet received the details of the Annan proposal and cannot reply to it," SNC spokesman George Sabra told AFP on Thursday.

"But its firm position remains that the opposition would not participate in any political project unless Bashar al-Assad is removed from power."

Thursday's heaviest death toll was in the northern Damascus suburb of Douma, where army bombardment killed 40 people, among them six women and six children, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Footage postage by activists on YouTube showed the bloodied body of a young boy with a man standing over it screaming: "Was this child taking up arms against the Assad regime?"

Of the more than 15,800 people killed since the uprising broke out, nearly 4,700 have lost their lives since April 12, when a UN-backed ceasefire brokered by Annan was supposed to have taken effect, the Observatory said.

Unions: Expanded gaming in Maryland would create jobs | Politics ...

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -

Promise of a special session to address expanded gaming in Maryland fell short last week, prompting organized labor to rally Monday in favor of further talks.

On Thursday, a work group of lawmakers and advisers announced it could not reach consensus over a special session that could have put into motion the necessary requirements for a sixth casino site in Maryland that would have been built in Prince George's County. The special session could have also examined lowering the current 67 percent tax rate on slot machine revenues, which House members of the work group opposed.

On Monday, union leaders demanded a special session to expand gaming in the state, and they sent every member of the General Assembly a strongly worded letter that takes a jab at the governor's economic policies citing job losses. In part, the union leaders wrote, "It's incomprehensible that lawmakers would give up the opportunity to create more than 8,000 jobs."

Organized labor framed its argument for expanded gaming in Maryland around job creation and additional revenue for the state.

"To be blunt, our members are disappointed, frustrated at the legislators -- the people we send down here to make the decision," said Vance Ayres, executive secretary and treasurer of the Washington, D.C., Building Trades Council.

The unions' letter also stated, in part, "After seeing our state listed among the nations' leaders in job losses two months in a row, we find it incomprehensible that our elected leaders would allow the opportunity to create more than 8,000 jobs in Prince George's County slip past us."

"No matter what our views on this gaming issue, we should at least let the voters decide," said Abiola Afolayan, political director at the Hospitality Workers Union.

Differences between the House and Senate over gambling on the last day of the regular session led to a breakdown on passing a budget.

The proposed legislation would let voters decide whether to allow a casino in Prince George's County. The measure would have also put table games in all the existing casino locations.

According a new poll by Opinion Works Research and Communications, 83 percent of registered voters want the issue decided by a referendum question on the November ballot, while 55 percent of voters surveyed indicated support for adding table games, shifting machine ownership from the state to the operators, reducing the tax rate on slots revenues by 10 percent and approving a casino site in Prince George's County.

Big Bang didn't need God to start universe, researchers say

Our universe could have popped into existence 13.7 billion years ago without any divine help whatsoever, researchers say.

That may run counter to our instincts, which recoil at the thought of something coming from nothing. But we shouldn't necessarily trust our instincts, for they were honed to help us survive on the African savannah 150,000 years ago, not understand the inner workings of the universe.

Instead, scientists say, we should trust the laws of physics.

"The Big Bang could've occurred as a result of just the laws of physics being there," said astrophysicist Alex Filippenko of the University of California, Berkeley. "With the laws of physics, you can get universes."

Filippenko spoke here Saturday (June 23) at the SETICon 2 conference, during a panel discussion called "Did the Big Bang Require a Divine Spark?" [Images: Peering Back to the Big Bang]

Quantum fluctuations
In the very weird world of quantum mechanics, which describes action on a subatomic scale, random fluctuations can produce matter and energy out of nothingness. And this can lead to very big things indeed, researchers say.

"Quantum mechanical fluctuations can produce the cosmos," said panelist Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the non-profit Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute. "If you would just, in this room, just twist time and space the right way, you might create an entirely new universe. It's not clear you could get into that universe, but you would create it."

"So it could be that this universe is merely the science fair project of a kid in another universe," Shostak added. "I don't know how that affects your theological leanings, but it is something to consider."

Filippenko stressed that such statements are not attacks on the existence of God. Saying the Big Bang ? a massive expansion 13.7 billion years ago that blew space up like a gigantic balloon ? could have occurred without God is a far cry from saying that God doesn't exist, he said.

"I don't think you can use science to either prove or disprove the existence of God," Filippenko said.

The origin of the laws of physics
If we're after the ultimate origin of everything, however, invoking the laws of physics doesn't quite do the trick. It may get us one step closer, but it doesn't take us all the way, Filippenko said.

"The question, then, is, 'Why are there laws of physics?'" he said. "And you could say, 'Well, that required a divine creator, who created these laws of physics and the spark that led from the laws of physics to these universes, maybe more than one.'"

But that answer just continues to kick the can down the road, because you still need to explain where the divine creator came from. The process leads to a never-ending chain that always leaves you short of the ultimate answer, Filippenko said.

The origin of the laws of physics remains a mystery for now, he added, one that we may never be able to solve.

"The 'divine spark' was whatever produced the laws of physics," Filippenko said. "And I don't know what produced that divine spark. So let's just leave it at the laws of physics."

The finding upends previous studies, which had estimated that the Red Planet's internal water stores were scanty at best ? something of a surprise, given that liquid water apparently flowed on the Martian surface long ago.

"It's been puzzling why previous estimates for the planet's interior have been so dry," co-author Erik Hauri of the Carnegie Institution of Washington said in a statement. "This new research makes sense and suggests that volcanoes may have been the primary vehicle for getting water to the surface."

The scientists examined two Martian meteorites that formed in the planet's mantle, the layer under the crust. These rocks landed on Earth about 2.5 million years ago, after being blasted off the Red Planet by a violent impact.

Using a technique called secondary ion mass spectrometry, the team determined that the mantle from which the meteorites derived contained between 70 and 300 parts per million (ppm) of water. Earth's mantle, for comparison, holds roughly 50 to 300 ppm water, researchers said.

"The results suggest that water was incorporated during the formation of Mars and that the planet was able to store water in its interior during the planet's differentiation," Hauri said.

Some of this water apparently made its made to the surface in the ancient past. NASA's Spirit and Opportunity rovers, which landed on the Red Planet in 2004, have found plenty of evidence that Mars was far warmer and wetter billions of years ago than it is today.

The two golf-cart-size robots have even spotted signs of ancient hydrothermal systems, suggesting that some places on the Red Planet once had both water and an energy source ? two key ingredients for the existence of life as we know it.

While the new results should help scientists better understand Mars and its history, they could also shed light on the evolution of large, rocky bodies in a more general sense, researchers said.

"Not only does this study explain how Mars got its water, it provides a mechanism for hydrogen storage in all the terrestrial planets at the time of their formation," lead author Francis McCubbin of the University of New Mexico said in a statement.

The study was published in the journal Geology on June 15.

England fight back to draw third Test in South Africa

England captain Dylan Hartley, who spent ten minutes in the sin bin during the second half, was satisfied with the result and the performance, which he thought represented a step forward from the first two Tests.

'Defence was good, ball-retention was good - we just didn't come away with the result. It was a tough Test, as always,' he said.

'In the last two games we've learned when the green machine gets going they're hard to stop. We took a bit of pride today in two-man tackles, getting it off the line, stopping their momentum.'

Coach Lancaster was disappointed with the number of penalties his side conceded, but was pleased to see some of his younger players hold their own against one of the world's best rugby teams.

'When Owen [Farrell] came on we had under 21s at 10, 12 and 13. Alex Goode was outstanding on his debut at full-back, so overall when you look at where we were and where we are now, I think we are in a good place,' he said.

Washington Capitals Make Anchorage's Wuthrich A 4th-Round Draft Pick

Right winger Austin Wuthrich of Anchorage became the first Alaskan taken in the 2012 NHL entry draft when the Washington Capitals selected him in the fourth round this morning.

Wuthrich, 18, is heading into his sophomore season at Notre Dame. The Caps made him the 107th overall pick.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder enjoyed a strong first season in South Bend, racking 7-10--17 totals in 36 games as a true freshman for the Fighting Irish.

Wuthrich previously played in USA Hockey's prestigious National Team Development Program for both the U-17 and U-18 teams.

In final rankings released by the NHL's Central Scouting before the draft, Wuthrich was ranked 94th among North American skaters, so getting taken with the 107th pick rated as a bit of a nice surprise.

California voters narrowly reject new tobacco tax

(AP) ? A California initiative to increase the tax on tobacco to pay for cancer research has failed by less than a percentage point after remaining too close to call for more than two weeks.

With about 5 million votes cast, "no" on Proposition 29 led by about 27,000 votes with about 105,000 left to count. The Associated Press analyzed areas where the uncounted votes remain and determined Friday there were not enough places where "yes" was winning to overcome the deficit.

The plan to add $1 to the cigarette tax was led by cyclist Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor. Tobacco companies, led by Philip Morris, poured millions of dollars into an ad campaign that whittled away support. Polls showed approval peaked around two-thirds in March but had fallen dramatically by the June 5 balloting.

Support for the initiative was strongest in the San Francisco Bay Area, while more conservative places like Southern California's Inland Empire opposed it.

Proponents said they would be back.

"This came so close, I think this is worth another try," said Stan Glantz of the University of California, San Francisco's Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. "I think it would be horrible if Philip Morris and Reynolds get away with this."

He suggested tobacco foes might turn to the Legislature, though lawmakers routinely reject attempts to raise tobacco taxes.

The opposition campaign will wait until all the votes have been counted before declaring victory, spokeswoman Beth Miller said.

Opponents of the measure raised $47 million to fight it, a huge sum even by California standards. By comparison, Jerry Brown spent about $36 million in his successful 2010 bid to become governor of California. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and his allies spent $47 million to beat back his recall challenge on June 5.

Armstrong and a coalition of anti-smoking groups raised about $12 million to bolster the measure, including $500,000 from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

While raising the price of tobacco has been shown to reduce smoking rates, especially in young people, campaign ads sponsored by tobacco companies focused on pocketbook issues. The ads noted money would be raised in California through the tax but wouldn't necessarily stay in the state for research, and raised the specter of an out-of-control bureaucracy that would be set up to oversee collection and distribution of the money.

The strategy didn't just stir doubt in the minds of voters.

Several major newspapers, including The Los Angeles Times, opposed the measure while expressing general support for such sin taxes and reluctance to side with tobacco companies. They argued that the revenue should go directly to the state, which now faces a $15.2 billion deficit.

The result was reminiscent a 2006 California cigarette tax measure that led by wide margins in early polling until tobacco companies spent $66 million to defeat it with ads featuring physicians.

California was once at the forefront of smoking restrictions and taxes, but the famously health-conscious state has not raised tobacco taxes since 1998. If the new tax had passed, California would still have had only the 16th highest tax rate in the nation.

Some smoking foes said they are weighing the idea of tackling the issue in the state Legislature.

The overwhelming majority of recent tobacco taxes across the nation have been approved in statehouses, not at the polls. But in California, where new taxes require a two-thirds vote in the Legislature, lawmakers have defeated more than 30 attempts to raise tobacco taxes in the last 30 years.

Missouri voters are expected to weigh in on a tobacco tax increase in November and similar taxes are working their way through the legislative process in the Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Illinois.

Paraguay's leftist president faces impeachment

ASUNCION (Reuters) - Paraguay's Senate will decide on Friday whether to oust President Fernando Lugo in a lightning-quick impeachment trial that he says is tantamount to a coup.

Lugo, a silver-haired former Catholic bishop who quit the Church to run for the presidency, is accused of mishandling armed clashes over a land eviction that killed 17 police and peasant farmers last week.

Lugo's rivals, who firmly control both houses of Congress, were confident they would get the votes needed to oust the president.

Lawmakers in the lower house agreed in a swift, near-unanimous vote on Thursday to start the impeachment. The Senate is set to vote at 4:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. EDT) on whether to sack the president less than a year before his term is due to end.

"This is an 'express' coup because (lawmakers) have done it in the wee hours of the night," Lugo told television station Telesur late on Thursday.

He has refused to resign, resisting pressure from church leaders to step down to ease mounting tension, and his defense team asked the Supreme Court to intervene on the grounds that the impeachment violates the constitution.

According to the rules set out by the Senate a day earlier, Lugo will get two hours to defend himself.

"The president has been given fewer guarantees and fewer rights to defend himself than someone with a traffic fine," said one of Lugo's lawyers, Adolfo Ferreiro. "They seem to think anything can be justified in the name of politics."

Lugo's rivals said they were expected to get the two-thirds support needed to remove him from office and defended the legality of the impeachment process.

"There's nothing illegal here, there's no constitutional rupture, no coup," said center-right lawmaker Carlos Maria Soler. "There should be enough votes."

PRO-LUGO FORCES GATHER

In the downtown square facing the Congress building, several thousand people gathered, most of them peasant farmers and leftist activists carrying banners with pro-Lugo slogans and waving the red, white and blue national flag.

"We're going to defend our president because we're the ones who chose him," said Amelino Benitez, 18. "We won't allow them to steal the only power that we have - our vote."

Extra police were sent into the streets of the capital city Asuncion, where most businesses were shuttered and rush-hour traffic was unusually light.

Lugo, 61, a mild-mannered leftist who speaks the Guarani Indian language, vowed to champion the needs of poor Paraguayans when he was elected four years ago, ending six decades of rule by the Colorado party.

His election raised expectations among his supporters that he would tackle rampant corruption and gaping income inequalities in the soy-exporting nation of 6 million people.

Paraguay has been plagued by political instability and is known regionally for its marijuana crops and as a hub for smuggling and money laundering.

Lugo, however, has struggled to carry out his reform agenda, including his promise to redistribute land to peasant farmers, due to the opposition's tight grip on Congress. A cancer scare and several paternity scandals have also clouded his presidency.

CONCERN IN REGION

If convicted on Friday on the charge of failing to fulfill his duties by allowing social conflicts to escalate, Lugo would have to leave office. Under Paraguay's constitution, an impeached leader is replaced by the vice president, who completes the term.

The next presidential election is in 2013 and Lugo's vice president, Federico Franco, who has been a fierce critic of Lugo, has been expected to run for office.

Some critics accuse Lugo of sympathizing with the peasant farmers who ambushed police officers last week when they went to enforce an eviction order on a farm in the rural northeast.

Legislators also accuse Lugo of having backed a meeting of young Socialists at a site owned by the Armed Forces and of acting meekly to fight a small, violent left-wing group called the Paraguayan People's Army, known by its Spanish initials EPP.

The impeachment trial has raised concern among South American governments, who dispatched their foreign ministers to the sleepy Paraguayan capital of Asuncion late on Thursday.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa warned that the UNASUR regional grouping could refuse to recognize the new government if the Senate removed Lugo from office.

"We could opt to refuse recognition for the new government or even close borders," Correa told a news conference.

The ALBA bloc of left-wing Latin American leaders including Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez branded the impeachment trial "a maneuver by right-wing politicians."

The last time a Paraguayan leader was impeached was in 1999 when Raul Cubas was accused of failing to fulfill his duties following the murder of the vice president and the killing of seven protesters. Cubas resigned before a verdict was reached.

Warner Bros. Puts the Brakes on Johnny Depp's Thin Man

johnny-depp-the-thin-man-slice

Director Rob Marshall now has a little more time to find a fitting actress to star opposite Johnny Depp in The Thin Man, as Warner Bros. has put a halt to production on the remake.? Depp was set to star as Nick Charles, one half of a married couple who solves murder mysteries while bantering back and forth and almost getting killed themselves.? This delay is, at the moment, less of a behind-the-scenes melodrama and more due to practicality.? Deadline reports that Depp is eager to take a break between films.? This also allows Marshall to move forward with his long-gestating Disney project, Into the Woods, a feature version of Stephen Sondheim?s fairy-tale musical.? Though The Thin Man was never officially greenlit, there is also some talk of budget concerns, which will likely push back the planned November start while the particulars are sorted out.

Mache Seibel, MD: Father's Day Song -- My Old Man

My father, Tony Seibel, was a first generation American, born to immigrant parents who came to the United States for a better life. Dad became an All State football player for his high school and played football for the University of Texas. He served in the Pacific as a marine during World War II and afterward became a successful merchant in Texas City, Texas, the small town I grew up in. Although his sister Zidella became one of the first female graduates from the University of Texas Medical Branch, it was from my father that I learned some essential health tips that impact my life even today. As Father's Day approaches, it seems a good time to share them with you.

Exercise every day. Dad walked every day. He would round up people to go with him and walk down the Texas City Dike, a two-mile road that projected into Galveston Bay. Sometimes he walked along trails that the city provided,or if the weather was bad, he'd just walk though the house round and round until he got his exercise in. Before he walked he had a simple series of exercises to stretch his muscles -- touch your toes, holding arms out to the side and move them in tiny circles, sit ups. No equipment required. Just make the time, count the number you want to do and do it as part of every day for about 20-30 minutes for all of your life.

Eat to live, not live to eat. Dad ate basic, whole foods. Cream of wheat or oatmeal or a soft-boiled egg for breakfast with a glass of milk; a sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes or a bowl of soup for lunch; and baked chicken or fish or occasionally a steak along with a salad and a small dessert for dinner. No fancy and caloric sauces. No second portions.

Get enough sleep. Long before we knew that too little sleep led to an increase in diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure, Dad made sure to get his 7-8 hours in every night. He worked hard and knew that if he was rested, he felt better.

Wash Your Hands. If you look at the directions for hand washing from the CDC, you'll find that hand washing with soap and running water is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid illness. Afterward he would use the paper towel to turn off the handles of the faucets and to open the doors before throwing the toweling away -- just like the CDC recommends. He followed their other recommendations on hand washing as well. And he was doing this before the CDC was founded in 1942.

Don't Smoke. For several years Dad smoked one cigarette a day when he came home from work. It was a way he relaxed for a few minutes. In 1964 when the Attorney General announced that smoking was linked to cancer, Dad threw away his cigarettes and never picked up another one. As he put it, "If those things can cause cancer, why would I smoke them?"

Incorporate Spirituality and Socialization Into Every Day. In his book Thrive, Dan Buettner explores the world's happiest people and finds that among other things, the happiest people have a sense of spirituality and socialize up to seven hours daily. Dad read from his prayer book every day when he woke up and loved to spend afternoons and weekends with family and friends in the pursuit of simple pleasures -- going to the beach, fishing, going out to dinner with friends, and visiting people in hospitals and similar places and spending time just making them feel good. Buettner also points out that only about 10 percent of our longevity is determined by our genes; the other 90 percent is determined by our lifestyle.

Sing Whenever the Feeling Grabs You. My life was filled with music; Dad saw to that. He sang at just about every opportunity he had, including singing wedding songs in his store to couples he sold wedding rings to. He would sing in any building where the acoustics were good and belt out "Fly Me To The Moon" on escalators in large hotels as he ascended to the top. Many studies have shown that singing can lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, improve breathing, reduce perceived pain, promote learning in children, forgo comforting memories and reduces stress. Music's many benefits is an important part of why I created HealthRock? which combines music and medicine to make learning to stay well fun and easy to remember. It's also the basis of why we create soothing instrumental music to help people relax and sleep. I just received word that HealthRock's "Sleep Tight" CD won CD of the Year from Creative Child.

Dad had a great impact on me and, as a result, on the thousands of patients I've treated over the years. He taught me how important it is to develop healthy habits that are part of every day. Incorporating these simple habits provides small differences that make a large impact on us over a lifetime. It's how we influence the 90 percent of our lives that is determined by lifestyle and allows us to live happier, healthier, more-vibrant lives.
