MasterCard confirms major credit card data theft

Law enforcement officials are investigating what appears to be a massive theft of U.S. consumers' credit card data, MasterCard confirmed Friday. The computer security expert who first reported the theft said it might involve 10 million MasterCard and Visa accounts, making it one of the largest credit card heists in recent memory.

"MasterCard is currently investigating a potential account data compromise event of a U.S.-based entity and, as a result, we have alerted payment card issuers regarding certain MasterCard accounts that are potentially at risk," the association said in a statement. "Law enforcement has been notified of this matter and the incident is currently the subject of an ongoing forensic review by an independent data security organization."?

The theft was first reported by well-known computer security journalist Brian Krebs on his blog, KrebsonSecurity.com. Krebs said the crime involves compromise of a credit card payment processor ? a "middle man" that ushers transactions between retailers and banks. The name of that institution is unknown, but processors have long been a target of identity thieves because of the enormous amounts of data they control. In 2008, Princeton N.J.-based Heartland Systems was hacked, exposing tens of millions of credit card account numbers to theft.

Krebs reported that hackers had access to the unknown processors data from Jan 21 through Feb 25, and was able to siphon off enough data that they could use it easily to create counterfeit cards. His sources called the leak "massive."

Gartner security expert Avivah Litan said she's been told that the stolen data is already being used on the street by identity thieves.

"I?ve spoken with folks in the card business who are seeing signs of this breach mushroom. Looks like the hackers have started using the stolen card data more recently," she said.

She's been told that investigators believe the data theft originated in New York City.

"From what I hear, the breach involves a taxi and parking garage company in the New York City area, so if you?ve paid a NYC cab in the last few months with your credit or debit card ? be sure to check your card statements for possible fraud," Litan said in her blog post on the topic.

MasterCard said none of its computers were hacked as part of the incident.

"MasterCard is concerned whenever there is any possibility that cardholders could be inconvenienced and we continue to both monitor this event and take steps to safeguard account information," the association added in its statement. "If cardholders have any concerns about their individual accounts, they should contact their issuing financial institution ... It is important to note that MasterCard's own systems have not been compromised in any manner. "

Tuesday we shared with you a story of an alleged Pinterest spammer who spilled his guts to The Daily Dot about how lucrative his business was, especially on the social networking bulletin board site, where he claimed he hauls in $1,000 a day. Wednesday, the website said the man "may or may not actually be a spammer," but that those who engage in similar work "not only confirmed the facts in his account as realistic but also derided him for sharing his secrets."

The spammer, "Steve," said in his original interview that he made so much money on Pinterest by using spambots tied to his Amazon.com Affiliate account. Then, when The Daily Dot asked for a follow-up interview, he said he had been pranking about his spam success.

"While we can?t verify Steve?s identity, spammers from the site Black Hat World" corroborated that "Steve" not only knew what he was talking about in terms of spam techniques, but was right on the money, literally, The Daily Dot said Wednesday.?

" 'I have a few sites doing $1000/day right now and I would NOT tell anyone about them or how they earn,? wrote meathead1234 in a discussion about the interview," said the website.

Others on the Black Hat World site were ticked off as well, including this remark from "inumel":

its because of idoits like this, who "brag" or who just aren't stealth about their earnings and their marketings are the reason why these things get patched so quickly... Now more companies whill be flooding bhw to see if people have been "marketing" on their respected sites ...

And patched Pinterest may be. As one Black Hat World member noted, "because of this Pinterest has changed their algorithm again today" to throw spammers off course.

Moreover, and for the first time, there appears to be a particular benefit for African Americans, who have hypertension prevalence rates near 42 percent, according to research presented March 25 at the American College of Cardiology's 61st Annual Scientific Session.

"What's unique about this study is that the results are very applicable to the general population. Our results strongly suggest a blood pressure benefit for moderate amounts of dietary isoflavone intake in young black and white adults," said Safiya Richardson, a graduating medical student at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons and the study's lead investigator. "Our study is the first to show a benefit in African Americans, who have a higher incidence of high blood pressure, with an earlier onset and more severe end-organ damage."

Compared to those consuming less than 0.33 mg of isoflavones per day, those reporting the most isoflavone intake (more than 2.5 mg per day) had a significantly lower systolic blood pressure (-5.5 mmHg lower on average). To help put this into context, an 8 ounce glass of soy milk has about 22 mg of isoflavones, and 100 g of roasted soybeans have as much as 130 mg.

"This could mean that consuming soy protein, for example, in combination with a DASH diet -- one that is high in fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy and whole grains -- could lead to as much as a 10 mmHg drop in systolic blood pressure for pre-hypertensives, greatly improving their chances of not progressing to hypertension," said Richardson. "Any dietary or lifestyle modification people can easily make that doesn't require a daily medication is exciting, especially considering recent figures estimating that only about one third of American hypertensives have their blood pressure under control."

Isoflavones are thought to work by increasing the production of enzymes that create nitric oxide (NO), a substance that helps to dilate or widen blood vessels, thereby reducing the pressure created by blood against the vessel walls. Richardson said this mechanism may partially explain why the study was able to find an association with smaller amounts of isoflavone intake than examined previously. The relatively pronounced results in the overall biracial cohort may be driven by a more intense effect of isoflavones in African Americans, Richardson said. This is because endothelial dysfunction, a condition in which the blood vessels have a hard time either producing or using NO, plays a bigger role in hypertension in African Americans than it does in whites.

"It's possible that these foods may help compensate for this," she said. "Based on our results and those of previous studies, we would encourage the average adult to consider including moderate amounts of soy products in a healthy, well-balanced diet to reduce the chances of developing high blood pressure. For people with hypertension, it's important that they talk with their doctor about isoflavones as a possible addition to a low sodium DASH diet that could reduce the need for medication."

Richardson added that different soy products have different concentrations of isoflavones, so it is important for consumers to do their homework.

Researchers analyzed data from year-20 of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, which is an NIH-funded study created to examine the development and determinants of cardiovascular disease. This study began in 1985 with 5,115 African American and white Americans aged 18-30 years old who have been followed and reexamined at various intervals. Year-20 was the first year that participants completed an extensive dietary survey. Multivariable linear regression models evaluated the relation between daily isoflavone intake and systolic BP (SBP) after dividing patients across quartiles according to self-reported isoflavone intake. Even after controlling for age, sex, BMI, smoking, alcohol, physical activity and total caloric intake, the relationship between daily isoflavones and lower systolic blood pressure remained.

Richardson says this study helps lay the groundwork for randomized controlled trials to help better understand the association between isoflavones and blood pressure.

Richardson presented the study "Dietary Isoflavone Intake is Associated with Lower Systolic Blood Pressure: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study" on March 25, 2012 in McCormick Place South, Hall A.

The implications for the health care overhaul are also enormous. The Congressional Budget Office says that about half of the people expected to gain coverage under the new law ? 16 million of the 31 million people ? will get it through Medicaid.

The Obama administration denies coercion and says the terms of the deal are exceedingly generous to states.

The states? argument has ?no logical stopping point,? said Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr., who will defend the health care law at the Supreme Court next week.
